Garden Design Process

A complete garden design commission will evolve over several different stages. Listed below are the stages that a typical project will undertake.

1. Site Visit and Consultation
The initial consultation enables us to visit the garden, assess the scope of works for a commission as well as the potential of the site. We will take photos of the site, as well as a detailed design brief from you, discussing initial ideas, your likes and wishes for the garden, styles, themes, time frames and so on. We will also show you examples of previous and current projects from our portfolio.

This site visit will allow us to give you an accurate price for a garden design commission. A nominal fee is charged for this initial service and is fully refundable against the cost of a garden design commission.

2. Site Survey and Outline Designs
First of all we will conduct a detailed survey of your house and garden, including existing levels, features, trees, planting, boundaries, manholes, drains, house and aspect. This will then be drawn up to scale as a base plan to enable us to develop the outline design proposals.

We will then explore different ideas and options for the garden in sketch plan format, hand drawn to scale in colour, with sketches to help you visualise our proposals.

After completion of the outline design drawings, the proposals will be presented and discussed with you at an agreed time and date.

This is a very creative process and the presentation is a two-way discussion between designers and clients. These drawings are neither loose nor vague, but considered designs to scale showing you the potential of the garden and providing you with the option to either choose a particular design to be detailed or select different ideas from different designs to create an amalgamated masterplan.

3. Masterplan and Detail Drawings
A detailed masterplan of the whole site is produced, in accordance with the decisions made at the first design presentation. Detailed information includes material specification, paving patterns, spot heights, finished levels and structure planting including trees and hedges.

Section-Elevations are produced through key areas of the design, elevating the masterplan and showing level changes, features, heights of structures and proposed planting. Lighting can play an important part within the design and a Lighting Plan is also included showing location of all lights, as well as type of fitting, materials, bulbs and numbers required. The detailed proposals are sufficiently accurate to obtain quotes to construct the garden.

4. Construction of the Garden
We use recommended garden contractors to build our gardens. Liaison between the chosen contractor, client and designers will help to realize the full potential of the project. We can undertake either an advisory role for this stage or a more detailed inspection and administration service.

5. Planting Design and Implementation
We design full planting plans showing the exact location and names of all plants within the scheme, as well as producing a schedule listing all plants and numbers required for the scheme. The planting plans will break the beds into key areas, and will offer a scheme that has all year round interest with seasonal flower colour, structural hedging and trees, winter interest, scent, colour schemes to suit and so on, depending on the style and brief of the garden.

We offer a complete supply and implementation service for the planting stage.
